Illinois Central College is getting a $1.2 million dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The money will pay for a new program in collaboration with Peoria District 150. Peoria Public Radio’s Tanya Koonce reports.

The Talent Search federal grant will mean $240,000 a year for five years to identify and assist disadvantaged students at Peoria High School and Manual Academy. ICC President Sheila Quirk-Bailey says the school appreciates the relation the program will strengthen with the region’s largest urban public school system. ICC will choose 500 students to participate in the Talent Search program. The disadvantage students, selected for their their potential to succeed in higher education will receive a host of wrap-around services.

District 150 Superintendent Sharon Kherat calls it an example of alignment efforts having a positive impact on students, families and the community.  ICC will staff the program that starts in September with a director, two success coaches and academic tutors.
