Former Reagan aide criticizes campaign civility

Cass Herrington

A former assistant for President Ronald Reagan says none of the current GOP presidential candidates can be likened to “The Great Communicator.”

Edward J. Rollins managed Reagan’s reelection campaign and is a political analyst for Fox News. Rollins says he hasn’t witnessed a presidential campaign this transformational since 1968 after the Vietnam War.

“This is a different environment, and I think to a certain extent, I don’t think anybody at this point in time, and I know the game as well as anybody, can predict who’s going to be the nominee.”

Rollins says if Reagan were alive, he would be “appalled by the tone of this campaign.”

Rollins is at Eureka College today for the school’s annual Reagan Birthday Dinner. Eureka is Reagan’s alma mater.
