Comptroller Introduces Web Tool That Sheds Light on Spending

Illinois Comptroller Leslie Munger is introducing a new online portal to help taxpayers follow the money.

The website combines information from the Comptroller's accounting system with information collected by the Illinois State Board of Elections.

Munger says the new Openbook portal allows anyone to look up the state’s contractors and see if they or their employees have contributed to a political campaign.

“Ultimately I think it gives taxpayers information to be able to make their own decisions about who they might want to vote for or importantly who might potentially be influenced by people who do business with the state,” Munger said.

Munger says the system was developed by her office and it’s another effort to improve transparency on the state’s finances. She says she hopes people will use Openbook as it relates to the November election.

The Comptroller says candidates and elected leaders behave more responsibly when taxpayers are watching. The website also offers a mobile friendly interface. You can link to the Openbook website with this story here.
