Amid Busy Travel, Area Law Enforcement Urge Caution

Area law enforcement agencies are urging motorists to drive safe during one of the heaviest travel periods of the year. They say drivers should always buckle-up, put away their cellphones, and never drink and drive.  Wednesday night is also one of the biggest party nights of the year. Illinois State Police Trooper Ross Green says people drinking should have a strategy before hitting the road:

“Whether that be a taxi cab ride or just a number in your pocket, have that plan in place so that way you’re not faced with a decision to possibly get behind the wheel when you should not be after consuming alcohol.”

Last year there were 15 traffic-related deaths across the state during Thanksgiving break. Green says penalties for one DUI violation can cost a person $19,000 including court fines and attorney fees. State Police and local law enforcement have increased patrols to crack down on impaired drivers and those failing to buckle up. The enforcement campaign continues through Sunday.
